Density dependent selection in parthenogenetic and self-mating populations.

چکیده

The consequences of density dependent selection on genetically heterogeneous, diploid populations reproducing by self-mating or various parthenogenetic mechanisms is investigated. A logistic fitness function that depends upon both the genotype of an individual and the density of the population is used. Such a fitness function simultaneously determines the population size and the genotype frequencies. The equilibrium solutions to a one locus and two locus model are given as we11 as some generalizations to n Ioci and nonlogistic fitness functions. Conditions are found that maintain several different genotypes simultaneously in the equilibrium population. The interaction of such selection with the genetic mechanisms which determine mode of reproduction in parthenogenetic populations is also discussed.

The Persistence of Facultative Parthenogenesis in Drosophila albomicans

Parthenogenesis has evolved independently in more than 10 Drosophila species. Most cases are tychoparthenogenesis, which is occasional or accidental parthenogenesis in normally bisexual species with a low hatching rate of eggs produced by virgin females; this form is presumed to be an early stage of parthenogenesis. To address how parthenogenesis and sexual reproduction coexist in Drosophila po...

The fitness effects of delayed switching to sex in a facultatively asexual insect

Facultative reproductive strategies that incorporate both sexual and parthenogenetic reproduction should be optimal, yet are rarely observed in animals. Resolving this paradox requires an understanding of the economics of facultative asexuality. Recent work suggests that switching from parthenogenesis to sex can be costly and that females can resist mating to avoid switching. However, it remain...

Inter-Genotypic Competition in Plant Populations II. Maintenance of Allelic Polymorphisms with Frequency-Dependent Selection and Mixed Selfing and Random Mating.

EPORTS by investigators in recent years indicate that substantial amounts of allelic polymorphism are often maintained in plant populations that exhibit various levels of outcrossing. The reason for this phenomenon is an important consideration in evolutionary theory, particularly for those organisms that exhibit a high degree of self-pollination (where the mating system would seem to impose a ...

Selection for mating reluctance in females of a diploid parthenogenetic strain of Drosophila mercatorum.

A diploid parthenogenetic strain of Drosophila mercatorum was outcrossed to produce genetic variance among the impaternate female offspring. Selection experiments were carried out for reluctance of the parthenogenetic females to mate. After only two cycles of selection, a parthenogenetic strain which is significantly less receptive to males from three different bisexual strains was obtained. It...

Plant population dynamics, pollinator foraging, and the selection of self-fertilization.

Many flowering plants rely on pollinators, self-fertilization, or both for reproduction. We model the consequences of these features for plant population dynamics and mating system evolution. Our mating systems-based population dynamics model includes an Allee effect. This often leads to an extinction threshold, defined as a density below which population densities decrease. Reliance on general...
